Lotët e para të mia, kur kam vizituar Shqipërinë ishin në momentin kur vendosëm flamurin në makinën tonë diplomatike. Për Flamurin e Amerikës tonë të dashur në kohën e regjimit komunist shqiptarët futeshin në burg
U ngute Zonja Ambasadore! Ne shqiptaro amerikanët, kemi pritur për 50 vjet për valvitjen e Flamurit të Shteteve të Bashkuara në Shqipëri dhe në çdo kënd të trojeve shqiptare. Ke vetëm disa javë në detyrë, por mos u habit fare se, ndoshta nuk e keni venë re ende, por flamuri amerikan valvitet gjithë andej dhe kudo në Shqipëri, në Kosovë dhe gjetkë.
Lotët e para të mia kur kam vizituar Shqipërinë me delegacionin e parë të Departamentit Amerikan Shtetit në mars/prill, 1991, ishin pikërisht në momentin kur për herë të parë vendosëm flamurin amerikan në makinën tonë diplomatike me të cilën udhëtuam anë e mbanë Shqipërisë, në atë kohë.
Nuk qava nga mjerimi në të cilin e kishte sjellë komunizmi Shqipërinë e para-ardhësve të mi, por qava se më në fund Flamuri i vendit tim, Shteteve të Bashkuara të Amerikës, po valvitej i lirë në tokën e të parëve të mi.
Ju lutem mos e diskurajoni përdorimin e flamurit amerikan në trojet shqiptare, madje edhe në manifestime të tilla, paqësore. Flamuri amerikan vetëm të mira i ka sjellur atij kombi. Shqiptarët e dinë këtë, pa marrë parasyshë keq qeverisjen e tyre për këto 30 vjetë, nga udhëheqës që pretendojnë dhe kanë pretenduar se kanë mbështetjen e SHBA dhe të ambasadorëve të saj të akredituar në Tiranë.
Të kisha qenë në vendin tuaj, unë nuk do të kisha bërë ndonjë koment për valvitjen e Flamurit Amerikan. Nuk i kontrollon dot me shqiptarët. Megjithë hallet e tyre të shumta , ata atje e kanë shpresën: Tek ky Flamur. Unë do isha shumë më i kënaqur për valvitjen e Flamurit të Shteteve të Bashkuara me atë entuziazëm që valvitet gjithmonë në Shqipëri. Kjo pas 50-vjet komunizëm, kur atëherë, vetëm të përmendje emrin e Amerikës, regjimi komunist të fuste në birucë.
Duke e njohur deri diku atë histori, unë do isha shumë më i pakënaqur në qoftë se flamuri i vendit tim të adaptuar, Amerikës tonë të dashur që na ka dhënë strehim mijëra shqiptaro amerikanëve si unë, ta shikonim në manifestime të tilla duke u djegur ose shkelur, ashtu siç ndodhë shpesh në shumë vende të tjera të botës.
