Kjo do të ishte ngjarja historike që do të shenjonte ndarjen përfundimtare me të shkuarën e regjimit komunist dhe hapjen ndaj epokës së demokracisë.
Rrëzimi i monumentit do të frymëzohej nga greva e urisë e ndërmarrë nga disa qindra studentë për t’i hequr universitetit emrin e tij.
Më 11 Shkurt 1991 studentët kërkuan heqja e emrit të universitetit “Enver Hoxha” në atë kohë por edhe rrëzimin e monumentit, gjatë një tubimi në Qytetin Studenti, ku kishin ardhur të flisnin përfaqësues të forcave politike.
Vetëm një javë më vonë, mëngjesin e 20 Shkurtit, protesta po merrte një përmasë të madhe. Rreth 100 mijë vetë ishin që në mëngjes në Qytetin Studenti. Një pjesë e protestuesve u drejtuan në qendër të qytetit, vendosën kavo në bustin e diktatorit Enver Hoxha dhe në orën 14:04 e rrëzuan.
