Kremtimi i Vitit të Ri është një ndër traditat më të vjetra rituale e shprehur gati tek të gjithë popujt e botës, pa marrë parasysh racën, fenë, kombin dhe përkatësitë e tyre të ndryshme. Disa hulumtues mendojnë se kremtimin e festës së Vitit të Ri, më së pari e kanë aplikuar kinezët, ndërsa një grup tjetër mendon se kjo traditë zanafillën e vet e ka nga romakët e vjetër.
Sipas dëshmive ekzistuese materiale të zbuluara deri tani, është vërtetuar se festën e Vitit të Ri më 1 Janar, së pari herë, në mënyrë festive dhe rituale, e kanë kremtuar romakët e vjetër dhe për ta kjo festë ishte simbol i fillimit të jetës së re plot shpresa të mira për të ardhmen.
Edhe pse popujt e kremtojnë këtë festë me besim në një fillim të ri dhe më të begatshëm, asaj nuk i gëzohen të gjithë në datën e njëjtë, sepse disa popuj e aplikojnë kalendarin Lunar
Në krahasim me kalendarin solar, i cili është fiks dhe i pandryshueshëm me 365 ditë, ata popuj që kalendarin e tyre e përcaktojnë sipas ciklit Lunar (të hënës) ardhjen e Vitit të Ri çdo vit, nuk e kremtojnë në ditën e njëjtë, sepse sikur dihet, ciklet e hënës janë të ndryshueshme dhe momenti i ndërrimit të mot moteve kremtohet me fillimin e hënës së re, gjegjësisht në muajin shkurt të vitit tonë kalendarik .
Vitin e Ri Lunar, sot më tepër si festë tradicionale popullore e festojnë në Kinë, Indi, Japoni, Vietnam, si dhe në disa shtete të tjera të Lindjes, dhe atë paralelisht, së bashku me kremtimin e Vitit të Ri Solar, të përllogaritur sipas kalendarit Gregorian.
Për kinezët, Viti i Ri Lunar është festa e pranverës. Ajo konsiderohet si kremte më e madhe nacionale, e cila shënohet me pompozitet të madh. Në Japoni kjo festë kremtohet me tryeza të begatshme plot me specialitete të rralla tradicionale, e në mesnatën e ndërrimit të motmoteve jehojnë 108 të rëna të kambanave nga të gjitha tempujt budistë anë e kënd vendit. Simbolika e 108, nënkupton si vërejtje dhe porosi për largimin e 108 mëkateve të mundshme të njeriut në jetë.
Edhe populli hebre Vitin e Ri e kremton në mënyrë madhështore, sepse ajo edhe sipas mësimeve religjioze, konsiderohet si festë shpirtërore, me të cilën shënohet përvjetori i fillimit të krijimit të Botës. Tek këta data e kremtes është e ndryshueshme për shkak të aplikimit të kalendarit të kombinuar lunar solar.
Edhe një gjë është karakteristike tek kremtimi çifut i Vitit të Ri: ata në çastin e ndërrimit të motmoteve, kanë vërtet një tryezë të pasur, por në dallim me popujt e tjerë, ajo është e shtruar vetëm me gjëra të ëmbla, pra tryeza e tyre e pasur është e begatshme vetëm me ëmbëlsira.
Në viset e ngrohta të gjysmësferës jugore të rruzullit tonë, Viti i Ri kremtohet në stinën e verës, pa borë dhe mrekullia dimërore me të cilat jemi mësuar në viset veriore, por kjo, aspak nuk e zvogëlon madhështinë e pompozitetit të kremtimit të saj.
Në shumë vende dhe shtete të botës është tradita që Viti i Ri të kremtohet në mënyrë kolektive. Nuk janë të pakta qytete të ndryshme të metropoleve të mëdha botërore, ku banorët e tyre, para çastit të ndërrimit të mot moteve masivisht dalin në qendër të qytetit.
Kjo formë e kremtimit të Vitit të Ri, tanimë është tradicionale në shumë kryeqytete të shteteve të Europës dhe Botës, sikurse është: Parisi, Londra, Roma, Madridi, New York, Moska, Meksiko, Kajro, Tokio.
Viteve të fundit, rregullimi dhe stolisja festive e qyteteve me drita, bredha dhe figura të baba-dimrit si dhe dalja masive e popullatës nëpër qendra dhe sheshe të qyteteve, aplikohet në mënyrë madhështore në të gjitha sheshet kryesore të qyteteve të Shqipërisë.
