Një pandemi është një sëmundje e re që është përhapur globalisht, sipas OBSH së. Duke qenë se shumica e njerëzve nuk janë imun ndaj kësaj sëmundje të re, ajo mund të përhapet përtej parashikimit.
Pandemitë, siç kanë shpjeguar disa ekspertë, nuk flasin për ashpërsinë e një sëmundjeje, vetëm për shtrirjen e saj gjeografike.
Kalimi nga epidemitë lokale në një pandemi globale, sipas OBSH-së, mund të ndodhë shpejt ose gradualisht, siç tregohet nga vlerësimi global i rrezikut, bazuar kryesisht në të dhënat virologjike, epidemiologjike dhe klinike.
Megjithatë, për momentin, OBSH thotë se koronavirusi nuk ka pasur një transmetim të qëndrueshëm dhe intensiv në komunitet ose nuk ka shkaktuar viktima në shkallë të gjerë.
Kina ka më pak se 80 000 raste në një popullsi prej 1 4 miliardë banorësh, shpjegoi OBSH. Në pjesën tjetër të botës ka 2 790 raste në një popullsi prej 6 3 miliardë banorësh.
