Sot, nuk ka statusin e një ylli, por Nellie Bly ka pasur një rol të jashtëzakonshëm në zhvillimin e shoqërisë.

Në gjysmën e dytë të shekullit të XIX, vetëm ideja që një grua mund të bëhej gazetare, tingëllonte e cuditëshme. E megjithatë, Nellie ishte një reportere si askush tjetër në atë kohë. Shkruante për fenomene sociale apo politike, e bënte anketime elektorale, edhe pse nuk kishte të drejtë vote.

Ishte e bukur dhe inteligjente, mund të bënte çdo gjë tjetër, por ajo kërkoi gazetarinë e kthyer në një mollë të ndaluar për gratë. Dhe ashtu bëri, duke fituar famë me disa reportazhe, dy nga të cilat hynë në histori.
Me këmbënguljen e saj hyri në punë tek New York World, dhe i kërkoi redaktorit të bënte një udhëtim rreth botës tamam si ai që përshkruhet në librin e Zhyl Vernit, dhe e realizoi, e madje e mundi rekordin 80 ditor të personazhit me 8 ditë.

Çdo gjë u raportua më saktësinë më të madhe. Aventura e dytë ishte ajo më e rëndësishmja në rrafshin gazetaresk Nellie u hoq si e çmendur, dhe arriti të hynte në spitalin e parë të sëmundjeve mendore në Amerikë, ku flitej se pacientët trajtoheshin me brutalitetin maksimal.

Qëndroi 10 ditë brenda me të çmendurit, ku iu nënshtrua dhe vetë trajtimit çnjerëzor, ku e lidhnin me zinxhirë, i bënin elektroshok, e rrihnin dhe e zgjonin çdo mëngjes me një kovë ujë të ftohtë.

Paskësaj, kjo pioniere e gazetarisë investigative shkroi një reportazh që vuri në lëvizje sistemin e detyroi autoritetet të ndërhynin
