Një mësuese nuk pëlqente aspak një nxënës të saj. Derisa mësoi sekretin e tij tragjik. Në ditën e parë të vitit të ri shkollor, u ndal para fëmijëve të klasës së pestë, u prezantua dhe në vazhdim u tha një gënjeshtër të madhe. Si shumica e mësuesve, shikoi nxënësit e saj dhe u tha se do t’i donte dhe do të kujdesej për të gjithë njësoj. Por kjo ishte e pamundur, sepse ishte një djalë i vogël, Teddy Stallard, i ulur në radhën e përparme. Zonja Thompson e kishte vënë re Teddy-n që nga viti i kaluar dhe nuk e pëlqente shumë. Nuk luante me fëmijët e tjerë, nuk ndiqte mësimin, rrobat e tij ishin gjithmonë të pista dhe me siguri nuk lahej aq shpesh sa duhet. Teddy ishte një fëmijë që e mërziste kur e shikonte dhe për këtë arsye shijonte momentet kur vinte një X të madh në fletoren e tij, fshinte gabimet e tij ose kur e vlerësonte me 6 ose 5 në detyrat e tij.
Në shkollën ku jepte mësim, zonja Thompson, duhej të kontrollonte të kaluarën e të gjithë fëmijëve në klasën e saj. Edhe të Teddy-t të vogël. Kështu që kur hapi dosjen e tij, e priste një befasi e madhe. Mësuesi që kishte Teddy në klasën e parë të Shkollës Fillore shkruante për të: “Teddy është një fëmijë i mrekullueshëm, vetëm buzëqesh. Është organizativ, i zellshëm dhe shumë i sjellshëm. Është frymëzim për fëmijët rreth tij”.
Mësuesja që kishte Teddy në klasën e dytë shkruante: “Është nxënës i shkëlqyer, simpatizohet shumë nga shokët e tij të klasës, por duket shumë i dëshpëruar sepse nëna e tij vuan nga një sëmundje e pashërueshme dhe jeta në shtëpinë e tij duhet të jetë shumë e vështirë”.
Mësuesi që e mësoi në klasën e tretë shkruante: “Vdekja e nënës së tij i kushtoi shumë. Përpiqet të bëjë më të mirën që mundet, por babai i tij nuk tregon shumë interes. Situata e keqe në shtëpi do ta prekë shumë shpejt, vetëm nëse diçka ndryshon shpejt”.
Mësuesi i Teddy-t në klasën e katërt shkruante: “Teddy është dorëzuar dhe nuk shfaq interes për shkollën. Nuk ka shumë miq dhe shpesh fle në klasë”.
Zonja Thompson e kuptoi problemin dhe ndjeu turp për veten e saj. U ndje edhe më keq kur të gjithë studentët e saj i sollën dhurata për Krishtlindje, të mbështjella me letër vezulluese dhe kordele të bukura. Të gjithë përveç Teddy-t. Dhurata e tij ishte e mbështjellë në një letër të pistë, kafe, që ndoshta ishte qesja e ndonjë ushqimi. Zonja Thompson e pati të vështirë ta hapte. Shumica e fëmijëve qeshën kur nxori një byzylyk që ai kishte bërë me spango dhe gurë, por edhe një shishe parfumi të hapur gjysmë të plotë. U ngrit nga vendi dhe i preu menjëherë të qeshurat e fëmijëve kur tha se sa shumë i pëlqente dhurata e tij. Më pas vuri byzylykun dhe hodhi një pjesë të parfumit në dorë. Teddy ishte i fundit që la klasën atë ditë. Duke dalë nga dera, iu drejtua mësueses së tij dhe tha me një zë të trishtuar: “Mësuese, sot ndiej aromën e nënës sime te ju!”.
Zonja Thompson qau shumë atë ditë. Që atëherë ndaloi së mësuari fëmijëve lexim, shkrim dhe aritmetikë. I donte të gjithë fëmijët, por i kushtoi vëmendje të veçantë Teddy-t të vogël. Sa herë që e ndihmonte me mësimet, mendja e tij dukej se gjallërohej. Sa më shumë që e inkurajonte, aq më shpejt u përgjigjej pyetjeve të saj. Deri në fund të vitit, Teddy ishte bërë një nga fëmijët më të zgjuar në klasë dhe, përkundër gënjeshtrës që i donte të gjithë fëmijët njësoj, Teddy tani ishte zyrtarisht i preferuari i saj.
Gjashtë vite më vonë, zonja Thompson mori një shënim tjetër, këtë herë me postë. Ishte përsëri nga Teddy dhe i shkruante se kishte mbaruar klasën e tretë të shkollës së mesme, por ajo ishte ende mësuesja më e mirë që kishte pasur ndonjëherë në jetën e tij.
Katër vite më vonë, mori një letër tjetër nga Teddy. I shkruante që është vështirë në Universitet, por së shpejti do të merrte diplomën e tij dhe me nota të mira. E përfundonte letrën duke shkruar se ishte ende mësuesja më e mirë dhe më e dashur që kishte pasur ndonjëherë.
Katër vite të tjera më vonë, një letër tjetër nga Teddy u shfaq në kutinë postare të zonjës Thompson. I shkruante që pasi mori diplomën, vendosi të ndiqte studimet edhe më tej. Përfundonte letrën duke shkruar se ende mbetej mësuesja e tij më e mirë dhe më e preferuara. Por këtë herë emri me të cilin nënshkruante ishte i ndryshëm: Dr. Fjodor F. Stallard.
Historia nuk mbaron këtu. Zonja Thompson mori një letër tjetër prej tij atë pranverë. I shkruante që ishte njohur me një vajzë dhe ishte gati të martohej me të. I thoshte se babai i tij kishte vdekur disa vite më parë dhe e pyeste nëse ajo mund të ulej në vendin e nënës së dhëndrit. Sigurisht që e bëri. Shkoi në dasmë duke veshur atë byzylyk që Teddy i kishte dhuruar dhe hodhi parfumin që i kujtonte nënën e tij. Në momentin që Dr. Stallard e përqafoi, i pëshpëriti në vesh: “Faleminderit, zonja Thompson, që besuat tek mua. Faleminderit shumë që më bëtë të ndihem i rëndësishëm dhe më treguat se si mund të bëj ndryshimin”. Zonja Thompson, me lot në sy, u përgjigj: “Teddy, po bën një gabim shumë të madh. Je ti ai që më mësoi se mund të bëj ndryshimin. Nuk dija se si t’i mësoja studentët e mi derisa të takova ty!”.
