OBSH e shpalli pandemi koronavirusin, por çfarë do të thotë kjo?

Organizata Botërore e Shëndetësisë shpalli koronavirusin e ri pandemi. Por çfarë kuptojmë me pandemi? OBSH përkufizon se pandemia është një përhapje e një sëmundjeje të re në shkallë botërore.

Një pandemi gripi ndodh kur një virus i ri gripi shfaqet dhe përhapet nëpër botë ndërkohë që shumica e njerëzve nuk kanë imunitet prej tij. Viruset që kanë shkaktuar pandemi në të shkuarën zakonisht kanë pasur origjinë nga gripet e kafshëve.

Disa aspekte të pandemisë së gripit mund të jenë të ngjashme me gripin sezonal ndërsa karakteristikat e tjera mund të jenë shumë të ndryshme. Për shembull, si gripi sezonal ashtu edhe ai pandemik mund të shkaktojë infeksione në të gjitha grupmoshat dhe shumica e rasteve do të rezultojë në sëmundje të kufizuara në të cilat personi merr veten plotësisht pa trajtim mjekësor. Por nga ana tjetër, zakonisht gripi i stinës shkakton shumicën e vdekjeve mes të moshuarve ndërsa raste të tjera të rënda ndodhin më së shumti mes njerëzve me kushte të tjera mjekësore, raporton Birn.

Ndryshe nga kjo, pandemia H1N1 shkaktoi sëmundje më të rëndë dhe më fatale mes më të rinjve, si mes atyre me kushte të tjera kronike ashtu edhe mes personave të shëndetshëm dhe shkaktoi më shumë raste pneumonie virale se sa shikohet zakonisht në gripin sezonal.

Si për gripin sezonal ashtu edhe për atë pandemik, numri total i njerëzve që sëmuren rëndë mund të jetë i ndryshëm. Gjithsesi, impakti apo rëndesa ka tendencë të jetë më e lartë te pandemitë, pjesërisht për shkak se një numër shumë më i madh njerëzish nuk ka imunitet paraprak ndaj virusit të ri. Kur një pjesë e madhe e popullsisë infektohet, edhe nëse pjesa e atyre që infektohen dhe që zhvillojnë sëmundje të rëndë është e vogël, sërish rastet e rënda mund të jenë goxha të numërta.

Si për gripin sezonal ashtu edhe për atë pandemik, kulmi pritet të ndodhë në sezonin e zakonshëm të gripit. Por siç kemi parë me pandeminë H1N1, pandemitë mund të kenë tipare të pazakonta epidemiologjike dhe shpërthime të mëdha mund të ndodhin edhe në muajt e verës.
